Sideline
I led design from 0-1 for two live social apps while working at Betty Labs. The first app we launched was Sideline: a live prediction game during NBA and NFL games.
The companion app for live sports
Sports fans are constantly checking online discourse and dropping takes while a game is on. Our goal was to capitalize on this behavior and become the de facto “second screen” for live sports. By creating an immersive live chat experience and prediction questions throughout the course of a game, fans stayed engaged on our platform for hours on end. Best of all, if a user answered enough questions correctly, they would split a pot of money with the other winners.
Logo design + animation
I was in charge of not only the product design for Sideline, but also the branding/visual design.
Home feed
On the home feed, users could join a live game or browse upcoming games.
When no live game was happening, users could browse the feed of upcoming games and get notified.
Live game
Within a game, players could chat and root for their favorite team with lightweight interactions. Throughout the NBA/NFL game, we would ask prediction questions. If a user answered enough correctly, they would split a pot of money.
Additionally, users could see a ledger of the past questions, check out their spot on a global leaderboard, and even see player stats.
Game UI evolution
Throughout the course of its existence, we were constantly making improvement to the live game to make it more interactive and retain users for longer periods of time. Our average user session length was 2 hours 48 minutes due to these updates.
Profile
Users ranked up to new tiers by playing the game and completing other challenges. They also earned badges for their efforts.
